Snow stuff

Snowflakes are simply crystals of frozen water (snow) that collect together. Most don't get much bigger than about half an inch in size. But under certain conditions, much larger flakes can occur, sometimes up to two inches across.

Snow is white because
Snow flakes are white because visible sunlight is white. Most things absorb sunlight which gives them their colour. Snow, however, reflects most of the sunlight. It's complex structure results in countless tiny surfaces from which visible light is very efficiently reflected. The small amount of sunlight that does get absorbed is done so uniformly over the wavelengths of visible light, that we see snow as white.

Snow is blue because
The only time we don't see snow as white is when we see it as blue. If reflected snow has to travel a long way (through snow), a pitifully small amount of red light is absorbed. It acts like a soft filter and this allows the blue to travel further, making the snow look blue.

Moke owners like snow because
It has to be the best stuff to slip and slide around in. Makes driving a Moke sort of like trying to catch a greasy pig. Plus snow mixes well with a Bourbon and Coke.
