Strathmerton

Strathmerton is a small Murray River township located on the Murray Valley Highway near the Vic / NSW state border. It is 15 km due west of Cobram, 229 km north of Melbourne, 20 km north of Numurkah and extends to the Murray River. It is the junction of railway lines which branch to Cobram and Tocumwal, NSW

The name came from a pastoral run, originally named Ulupna, which was taken up by Benjamin Boyd in 1842. Boyd renamed the run Strathmerton, Strath being Gaelic for a wide river valley and Merton being the name of his family home in Scotland.

The township of Strathmerton began in 1887 in anticipation of the extension of the railway from Numurkah. The place had already had a pub for about ten years previous. Farm sections started being sold in the 1870s and township blocks about 1887.

During the late 1940s and early 1950s the irrigation channels and drains for the Murray Valley irrigation area reached Strathmerton and Ulupna.

Kraft Foods established a dairy factory at Strathmerton in 1950. It had a small start but now knocks out all of the Philadelphia cheese and 90% of the Coon cheese produced by Kraft.

Strathmerton has recreation facilities which include a golf course, swimming pool, tennis courts and sports ovals and if you need a quick re-blessing, there are three churches.

It's the favorite place for Ulupna Moke campers to get their ice, grog and bread. It's also the closest place for petrol and a counter meal.
