Ulupna Island

Ulupna Island (2833 ha) lies at the eastern end of Barmah State Park which is a part of the largest river red gum forest in Victoria. The island is bounded by the Murray River and its anabranch, Ulupna Creek.

Located to the north of Strathmerton, the best way to get there is via Bourchiers Rd. The route is clearly signposted from town. Here you will find a bunch of pleasant natural sandy beaches, such as Carter's (has dunnies), Labbett's and Morgan's Beach (further west).

Winja Ulupna is the Yorta Yorta word for "Women's Haven' but it's also a bit of a haven for guys as well.

Koalas became extinct in 1902 and were reintroduced in 1976. They have been successfully re-established and can be seen high up in the river red gum trees. Living in its natural habitat the Eastern Grey kangaroo is also a common sight, especially in the early morning and evening.

For those who enjoy bush walking the island has a list of 180 plants and 120 bird species which have been identified. This is one of the few places upstream from the Hattah Lakes that carries the original River Red Gum vegetation. This is mainly due to the fact that there has been little grazing or timber cutting permitted in this area.

The island is extremely popular, with Moke owners, in the warmer months.
